REDS: signs and symptoms that you could be underfuelling for health and performance

Below is a checklist that you can go through to determine if you have any red flags that may indicate that you are not fuelling adequately to support your performance and overall health.

Now, it is important to note that many athletes will have periods of low energy availability (LEA); a mismatch between the energy consumed through diet and that expended in exercise which leaves the body’s total energy needs unmet. When minor and brief this is typically not concerning and may even be an intentional, such as with a “train low” strategy. It is when an athlete is in a state of LEA for a prolonged period of time that it becomes problematic and can have serious consequences for their health, wellbeing and performance. Exposure to problematic LEA is what leads to REDS.

It is also important to note that experiencing any of the above signs and symptoms does not necessarily mean you have REDS. This is why it is important to seek out the guidance and support of your sports doctor and an appropriately qualified sports nutrition expert to screen you appropriately. REDS is a medical diagnosis.
